5 Warning Signs of Health Problems for the Aging Parents

When we were younger, we tend to live in the present and most of us do not care enough for our health to start taking care of our bodies early on. This could lead to our health deteriorating as we age, sometimes earlier than we expected. Below, we review 5 warning signs that you need to look for in your aging parents to start helping them restore or maintain their health before it gets worse.

Metabolic Syndrome

This syndrome affects about 40% of the population aged 60 and above, and is characterized by an increased risk of heart conditions and diabetes. Individuals at risk of metabolic syndrome will have high blood pressure and blood sugar, along with high amounts of triglycerides – a form of fats – and of course, belly fats. If the parent has a wide waist measurement – 40 inches in men and 35 inches in women, they could have these increased risks on their health. This can be prevented early on by exercising more and drinking less alcohol.

Dementia

When someone has dementia, they have a collection of at least two signs that could impair their daily life activities. These impairments could include difficulties in memory recall which is very common as we age, as well as some struggles in term of language – finding the right words, communication, reasoning and focus. They might show signs of having frequent mood swings and a personality change. They could have always been the quiet type, but their impaired judgement, an early sign of dementia, could lead them to start acting and speaking boldly.

Arthritis

Arthritis is the condition that occurs when there is inflammation in your joints, leading to the joints swelling, redness, stiffness and difficulties in moving the joints completely. Elderlies complaining of these pains, along with some possible deformities in their joints, could be displaying signs of arthritis, which happens as our old injuries catch up with us or if we are overusing our joints. As an example, arthritis in the knees are incredibly common since we walk around upright. One key to preventing the risks of arthritis is weight management, whereby losing 11 pounds can decrease the arthritis in the knees by 50%.

Glaucoma

When elderlies start complaining of some blind spots in their sights, perhaps accompanied by painful eyes, blurry vision or even tunnel vision which happens in the advanced stages, they need to get diagnosed for glaucoma and treated quickly. Glaucoma can lead to blindness if left untreated, since the optic nerve is affected by an increase of pressure in the eyes and this optic nerve damage can gradually deteriorate. When your parents are above the age of 40, it is important to go for glaucoma screening once every 4 years and if you have an increased risk due to family genetics or over the age of 65, you need to screen every 2 years.

Depression

Physical symptoms aside, the elderlies can pertain issues with their mental well-being as well. Clinical depression usually occurs along with other illnesses, and could increase their risk for a heart attack. Usually, these elderlies have lost their social support systems – siblings’ death, retirement and so on. You should watch out for signs of insomnia, restlessness, difficulties concentrating and overwhelming feelings of guilt. They could also exhibit physical symptoms such as a persistent digestive issue even with treatments available. Depression can be screened through several tests & a physical exam as well.

Prevention is always the key, and where that is not possible, it is important that the children start watching out for abnormal changes in their parents. Frequent check-ins are required as our parents get older to prevent their health from deteriorating faster.
